About Sea to Shore Systems

StSS specializes in providing services, products, and training in the field of marine and coastal acoustic systems. This includes site selection, system design, assembly, test, deployment, recovery, and data collection.

Deploying acoustic and oceanographic sensors in a coastal environment is a challenging endeavour. It is a corrosive, high energy environment, which is very unfriendly to devices and cables. StSS has many years of experience in addressing these challenges. StSS’s expertise includes getting the data through the destructive intertidal zone, data collection in remote, off-grid areas, and mitigating data contamination. Supporting expertise includes system design and site selection to maximize the science effectiveness of the sensors for the user’s objectives, and system reliability.

StSS supplies services and solutions to government agencies, research institutions, societies, and private companies. StSS recently completed the installation of 16 remotely cabled hydrophone sites for the BC Coast-Wide Hydrophone Network (spanning 800 km of the BC coast), and was responsible for designing, installing, collecting, collating, and storing the acoustic data from the hydrophones for later analysis. It has also developed an Acoustic Recording Buoy for the CETUS Research & Conservation Society and the Cowichan First Nation.

Sea to Shore Systems supports education and training programs for organisations, communities, and schools. These are valuable tools for providing public awareness of the importance of underwater noise and acoustics for marine ecosystems.

About the two Principals

Jeff Bosma, Chief Executive Officer

Jeff has a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and is currently in the position of Chief Executive Officer for Sea to Shore Systems Ltd (StSS). Previously, Jeff was the Test and Development Manager in Marine Operations, and the Technology Demonstration Facility Engineer at Ocean Networks Canada. He was the production manager at AML Oceanographic for 5 years responsible for production operations, quality control, and calibration standards for the company’s deep ocean instrumentation. Jeff has over 30 years of experience in ocean instrumentation.

Tom Dakin, PhD Chief Scientist

Tom has a PhD in Earth and Ocean Science, spent 12 years in the Canadian Forces as both a Maritime and Aerospace engineering officer with a focus on submarine detection. He spent 17 years as the R&D manager at AML Oceanographic and 8 years at Ocean Networks Canada designing and testing deep ocean sensors and running the underwater acoustics program. Tom is now the Chief Scientist at Sea to Shore Systems developing and helping to deploy underwater acoustic monitoring systems for NGOs, industry, and government.

StSS offers custom design services to solve specific underwater acoustic requirements. Examples include:

  • a small, easy to operate and deploy Acoustic Recording Buoy (ARB) for CETUS to monitor boat activity near whales.
  • Low Frequency Hydrophone Calibration System provides a way of calibrating hydrophones at the extreme low end of their frequency range. This allows accurate low frequency measurements as well as early detection of hydrophone element and pre-amplifier failures.

  • Folding and collapsible hydrophone mooring design to facilitate the deployment and recovery of seafloor moored hydrophones using small boats.

 

  • ROV tools for the recovery of seafloor moorings and cables.

  • Design of an underwater cable splice system to improve the reliability of underwater cables.

  • Hydrophone Tow Body and Cable for an autonomous surface vehicle

  • Remote shore boxes for BC Coast-Wide Hydrophone Network
